by | Mar 20, 2017 | Articles, The League, The Team

The Cowboys and their division rivals continue making over their rosters via free agency, including the NY Giants signing franchise player Jason Pierre-Paul to a whopping contract. Let’s review what’s happened over the first 10 days of free agency within the NFC East by listing many of the high profile player additions/subtractions on the rosters of the Cowboys, Redskins, Eagles and Giants. (updated March 19, 2017)

Free agents retained:

  • RB Darren McFadden: 1 year, $980k
  • WR Terrance Williams: 4 years, $17m
  • WR Brice Butler: 1 year deal, $1.1m
  • G Jonathan Cooper: 1 year, up to $2m

Players Added:

  • CB Nolan Carroll – former Eagles CB signs for 3 years for $10 with $3m guaranteed
  • DT Stephen Paea – former Bears, Redskins and Browns defensive lineman, 1 year $2m
  • DE Damontre Moore – local kid from Rowlett and Texas A&M, former NY Giant and Seahawk, 2 year deal for $1.65m

Free agents still unsigned by Cowboys or any other team:

  • QB: Mark Sanchez & Kellen Moore
  • TE: Gavin Escobar
  • LB: Justin Durant, Andrew Gachkar, Rolando McClain
  • DL: Richard Ash

Players Lost:

  • Starting LG Ron Leary – signed with Broncos, 4 years for $35m with $20m guaranteed
  • Backup RB Lance Dunbar – signed with Rams, 1 year up to $3m

  • Starting CB Brandon Carr – signed with Ravens, 4 years, $23m
  • Starting CB Morris Claiborne – signed with Jets, 1 year for $5m
  • Starting SS Barry Church – signed with Jaguars, 4 years $26m
  • Safety J.J. Wilcox – signed with Buccaneers, 2 years $8.5m
  • Starting DT Terrell McClain – signed with Redskins
  • DL Jack Crawford – signed with Falcons, 3 years $10.3m
  • DL Ryan Davis – signed with Bills

Cowboys notes: The defensive backfield has taken the biggest hit in free agency with the departure of 3 of 4 starters including SS Barry Church and both starting cornerbacks (Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne). Backup safety J.J. Wilcox also signed elsewhere. The Cowboys added cornerback Nolan Carroll, formerly of the Eagles. But cornerback and safety remain areas of need in the upcoming draft.

The best offensive line in football has lost two starters with RT Doug Free’s retirement and LG Ron Leary’s massive deal with the Broncos for $35 million. Backup guard Jonathan Cooper re-signed for a 1-year deal to add depth in Leary’s absence. In the offensive backfield, backup RB Lance Dunbar left for the Rams, but Darren McFadden returns as Zeke Elliott’s backup on a 1-year deal.

Free Agents Lost:

  • WR DeSean Jackson– signed with Buccaneers for 3 years, $35m
  • WR Pierre Garcon – signed with 49ers for 5 years, $47.5m
  • DL Chris Baker – signed with Buccaneers, 3 years $15.75m

Franchise Player Who is Staying (for now):

  • QB Kirk Cousins – signed his franchise tender for 1 year, $23.94m

Free Agents Staying Put:

  • TE Vernon Davis – stays with Redskins for 3 years, $15m

Free Agents Added:

  • DT Terrell McClain – the former Cowboy signed for 4 years, $21m
  • WR Terrelle Pryor  – former Cleveland Brown got 1 year, $8m

  • SS D.J. Swearinger – former Cardinal safety signs for 3 years, $13.5m
  • DT Stacy McGee – former Raider signs for 5 years, $25m

Redskins Notes:  The team lost its two top wide receivers (Jackson, Garcon) but the signing of former Cleveland Browns star Terrelle Pryor brings in a big-play threat who helps fill that void. He will be a weapon for QB Kirk Cousins who signed his franchise tender. But Cousins has asked to be traded, and the general manager (Scott McCloughan) has resigned.  There’s turmoil in D.C. Will Cousins be there by the time minicamp rolls around?

Free Agents Added:

  • WR Alshon Jeffrey – the former Chicago Bear signed a 1-year, $14m
  • WR Torrey Smith – former 49ers receiver signs for 3 years, $15m
  • QB Nick Foles: 2 years, $11 million.
  • G Chance Warmack – former Titan signs as backup for 1 yr, $1.15m
  • G Stefen Wisniewski – decides to re-sign for 3 years, $8.025m

Free Agents Lost:

  • CB Nolan Carroll: leaves Philly for Cowboys; 3 years for $10m
  • LB Connor Barwin: the pass-rusher signs with Rams, 1 year for $6.5m
  • DT Bennie Logan: cashes in with Chiefs for 1 year, $8m
  • QB Aaron Murray: signs with Rams

Eagles notes: The Eagles defense has lost three starters (CB Carroll, DT Logan, and OLB Barwin). But the offense has improved thanks to the big-time signing of Alshon Jeffrey. He’s a physical, big-play receiver who upgrades their previously sub-par receiving corps. Receiver Torrey Smith also adds veteran depth at receiver. QB Nick Foles returns to Philly after a 2-year absence. He will be the backup to Carson Wentz. Foles went to the Pro Bowl in 2013 as the Eagles’ starter, but was traded after the 2014 season to the Rams for QB Sam Bradford.

Franchise Player:

  • DE Jason Pierre-Paul: a week after receiving his franchise tag, JPP agrees with the Giants on a long-term deal for 4 years, $62m, including $40m guaranteed

Free Agents Added:

  • WR Brandon Marshall: former Broncos/Bears/Jets star signed for 2 years, $12m
  • OL D.J. Fluker: former Charger, 1 year for $3
  • TE Rhett Ellison: former Viking gets 4 years, $18m
  • QB Geno Smith: former Jets 1st round pick reportedly agrees to new deal

Free Agents Lost:

  • K Robbie Gould: leaves Giants for 49ers; 2 years for $4m
  • RT Marshall Newhouse: signs with Raiders for 2 years, $3.5m

Giants notes: keeping Pierre-Paul is a big move for the pass rush. The team released Victor Cruz, but adds superstar receiver Brandon Marshall to an offensive arsenal that already includes Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard. QB Eli Manning must be drooling right now! That’s an impressive trio of receivers.
