Scouting the Stars: DeMarcus Ware

by | Apr 11, 2017 | Articles, Entertainment, The League, The Team

What exactly does a scouting report look like? And what specifically do the scouting reports of the greatest players in Cowboys’ history contain?

The Cowboys’ digital version of the Scouting Report for DeMarcus Ware is proudly displayed outside the scouting offices at The Star in Frisco. So what does the report say about the future Hall of Fame pass rusher who was the Cowboys’ 1st round pick in 2005?

Here’s what the Cowboys’ report says about Ware who played left defensive end at Troy University. The report was filed January 14, 2005, just 3 ½ months prior to the draft. It’s based on game film of Troy playing South Carolina, Arkansas and LSU (all big-time opponents from the powerhouse S.E.C.).

SUMMARY: DeMarcus is somewhat undersize but has outstanding tools to rush the passer – he has very good burst and speed off the edge – can flatten and close to the passer – plays with good instincts and awareness – shows intense desire to run down ball carrier – looks fluid in zone drop – can play through trash – has very good hand and foot coordination – can play off low blocks – very good slant and control balance – shows good ability to dip shoulder and roll hip when rushing passer – good speed to power – this player has a lot of upside – he will get bigger – can be a difference maker in big games

PROJECTION: Marcus (note the spelling error of his name) is undersized but has all the tools to be a very good pass rusher next level – I like his action – has long arms – prototype – well proportioned – will need some bulk.

GRADE: 1.25 – This is an outstanding grade because lower numbers are better; the grade basically means 1st round, the top quarter of the first round. (note: the final grade is on the bottom right corner of the page)

Postscript: DeMarcus Ware was selected by the Cowboys with the 11th overall selection in the first round. He is the team’s all-time sack leader. He recently retired from the NFL and will be a strong candidate for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
